Planning the Garden, Part 1

Over the winter I dreamed up tons of ideas for the backyard and the vegetables beds I wanted. It took most of the winter to come up with a plan that allowed for the most raised beds as possible giving the limited light in the yard.

When I first looked at the house it was summer and hot and the idea of a backyard filled with trees was inviting. It feels about 5-10 degrees cooler in the backyard because of the trees. However once I moved in, the trees slowly became less and less inviting. First came the realization that the “grass” wasn’t as much grass as I had thought. Add a dog and rain and bye-bye any grass. Then the first winter arrived, and so did all the pine needles… there are 10 pine trees in the backyard and then many more behind my fence that also rain pine needles into the yard.

After this first winter I was hopefully optimistic about grass. In school I was taught that the trees drop their leaves in the fall to cover things living in the ground (a.k.a grass). Either my school lied to me or the grass was so dead even leaves couldn’t save it.

Each year the ground gets muddier and grosser and any work I did the previous year is erased come winter. So this year I was going to build raised beds in any space that got light and basically cover the rest with gravel. Just because we were curious we called and got an estimate to get the trees cut down… it was so much lower than we thought! As soon as the guy was out the door I told Vince we are getting it done.

Unfortunately my garden plan has to be completely redesigned and I cant start anything till the trees come down. I am happy to have the trees gone and to really expand the garden, but the plants will be so delayed we won’t get much this year… but I just keep thinking about the next year. I just pray everything goes smoothly.
