New Master Closet!

Last week was a bit of a crazy week. I decided to finally redo the master closet.
Between rehoming the clothes for a bit and spending all day working, the house got a bit messy…

But it was worth it! We gained so much space in the closet and everything now has a home.

When I first moved in the master closet was odd. It was big but there was only about two feet of hanging space, the rest of the walls were empty. I really wish I had gotten a picture because it was so weird no one believes me.

So I took that down and got this Martha Stewart Closet System from Home Depot.

Back wall and main hanging area.
Right wall of long hanging.
It would have been perfect, except for two things. One, I didn’t have the tools needed to cut and install them to maximize the hanging space. Two, one of the walls was deemed too shallow by all closet systems so it was left bare.

Shallow wall: I ended up hanging hooks for stuff and putting shelves on the floor for shoes
Oh, and we took down the door. It was always open which made it hard to get to this wall behind the door.

Fast forward three year, add another person and another on the way, and we needed more space.

So we installed two hanging rods across the back of the closet with a shelf above. This gave us over a foot of extra hanging space per rod. We now easily fit all our clothes and some teeny-tiny clothes for the baby.

On the wall that the closet people deemed “too shallow” I cut and installed shelves. I intended these to be for shoes, but I had enough room to also put clothes (which freed up a drawer in the bedroom for baby stuff, this baby has more stuff than I do).

I was cheap and instead of buying new wood and having it cut at the store, I spent hours cutting down shelves I had salvaged from my mom’s garage, but they now fit exactly how I need.

The only thing left to do is install the rod for the long hanging items (like dresses). I am a visual person so I had to wait till everything was up so I could see how much room was left. Then we decided we wanted either a curved rod or something similar and that had to be ordered.

It may not look extremely professional, but it is so much better.
Yes there are still shoes on the floor, but they are the ones I wear on a regular basis so even if they had a spot on the shelves, they would be on the floor.

I'm sure I will find something to tweak over the next few months, but for now it is perfect and organized.
